The H. L. Hunley Award was created by the Sons of Confederate Veterans to recognize deserving Junior ROTC cadets who have demonstrated the qualities of Honor, Courage, and Commitment to his or her unit throughout the school year. The award honors the crew of the Confederate submarine H. L. Hunley, the first submarine to sink an enemy vessel in combat. Typically, the award is given to a second year cadet identified by their JROTC instructors and is presented by a member of the local Sons of Confederate Veterans.
